Board emphatically denies rumours, affirming Gambhir’s contract and role amid growing pressure over India’s red-ball struggles.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decisively put to rest swirling rumours about a shake-up in the Indian Test team’s coaching setup, confirming Gautam Gambhir will remain at the helm as Test coach. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia categorically denied reports of any talks to replace Gambhir, calling such speculation “nothing but rumours.”
Despite mixed results in Test cricket under Gambhir’s leadership—with India suffering 10 defeats against the traditional SENA powerhouses (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia)—the board remains firmly behind the former star batsman.

While Gambhir’s tenure has seen notable white-ball triumphs, including ICC and ACC title wins, India’s inconsistent red-ball form sparked intense debate following last month’s crushing 2-0 home Test series loss to South Africa.
Speculation had linked VVS Laxman, head of cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, as a potential successor amid calls for change. However, Saikia dismissed such rumours outright, confirming no alternative coach has been approached and Gambhir’s contract remains secure through the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Looking ahead, India face a grueling Test calendar with tours to Sri Lanka and New Zealand in 2026, culminating in a high-stakes home series against Australia in early 2027—series that will be critical to defining India’s Test cricket trajectory.
On the shorter formats front, Gambhir’s immediate focus will shift to defending India’s T20 World Cup crown on home soil in February 2026, with a rejuvenated squad under his stewardship.
As scrutiny intensifies, the BCCI’s firm backing of Gambhir sends a clear message: continuity and confidence in the coach’s vision remain intact despite the challenges on the field.
