IPL 2026

Delhi Capitals broke free from a spiraling run of defeats on May 1, pulling off a stunning seven-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur with a record chase of 226 — their highest successful pursuit in IPL history.

Coming into the contest on the back of three straight losses—including a failed defense of 264 and a collapse to 75 — Delhi looked a side short on confidence. They left with momentum restored, hunting down 226 with five balls to spare in a statement turnaround.

For Rajasthan, it was a night of “what could have been”. Riyan Parag returned to form with a commanding 90, but the knock ultimately proved futile as the Royals slipped to their fourth defeat in six matches after starting the season with a 100% record in their first four games. Their top-four position is now under threat, with Gujarat Titans closing in.

Parag, Jurel rebuild after early blows

Rajasthan’s innings began shakily, losing both openers inside the first two overs. The much-anticipated duel between Mitchell Starc and teenage prospect Vaibhav Sooryavanshi never materialized, as Kyle Jamieson removed the youngster early.

After Yashasvi Jaiswal launched Starc for a first-ball six, the Australian quick bounced back to dismiss him soon after. At early trouble, Dhruv Jurel and Parag steadied the innings, guiding RR to 56 in the powerplay.

The pair stitched a 102-run stand off just 59 balls, with Parag dictating terms. Under scrutiny heading into the match, he responded with authority — bringing up his fifty off 32 balls and anchoring the innings with eight fours and five sixes.

Ferreira’s late blitz lifts Royals to 225

Parag fell for 90 just as he eyed a maiden IPL century, but the platform was firmly set. Jurel added a composed 42 off 30, while a late surge from Donovan Ferreira transformed the innings.

Ferreira smashed an unbeaten 47 off just 14 balls, dismantling the bowling attack in the death overs. His assault included three consecutive sixes off Kuldeep Yadav, followed by clean hitting against Starc and T Natarajan.

Starc, however, stood out for Delhi with figures of 4-0-40-3, providing crucial breakthroughs amid the carnage as Rajasthan posted a daunting 225.

Rahul, Nissanka power Capitals’ response

Delhi’s reply was emphatic from the outset. KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka erased memories of their previous powerplay collapse by racing to 110 in just 9.3 overs.

Nissanka, drafted in as opener, was particularly aggressive—hammering 62 off 33 balls at a strike rate above 187%, including six fours and three sixes. Rajasthan briefly clawed back through Ravindra Jadeja, who dismissed Nissanka to break the stand.

Rahul, anchoring the chase, combined with Nitish Rana for a vital 61-run partnership. Rana’s brisk 33 off 17 kept the pressure on before he fell to Tushar Deshpande.

Late nerves, clinical finish

With 53 needed off the final 30 balls, Delhi held a slight edge, but Jofra Archer reignited the contest by removing Rahul for 75 (40), an innings studded with six fours and five sixes.

A brief floodlight outage in the 17th over added to the tension, but Delhi stayed composed. Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma ensured there were no stumbles in the closing stages.

Ashutosh sealed the chase with authority — smashing 16 runs in the 18th over before finishing the job with a boundary and a single, as Delhi completed the 226 chase with a ball to spare.

For the Capitals, it was a timely reset. For the Royals, the slide continues — with pressure mounting as the playoff race tightens.
