CEC orders swift arrests, 24/7 patrols in West Bengal amid post-poll violence

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

The Election Commission of India has directed authorities in West Bengal to take immediate and firm action against incidents of post-election violence, ordering arrests of those involved and mandating continuous security patrols across the state.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar issued the directive following reports of clashes, vandalism, and intimidation in several districts after the declaration of Assembly election results. The Commission instructed the state’s Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and the Kolkata Police Commissioner, along with senior officers of the Central Armed Police Forces, to ensure round-the-clock vigilance.

District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police have been asked to remain on high alert and respond swiftly to any disturbances. The Commission emphasized a “zero tolerance” approach, calling for decisive intervention to prevent escalation, safeguard lives, and protect public and private property.

The move comes after multiple incidents of violence were reported from politically sensitive areas, with allegations of arson, forced displacement, and attacks on party workers surfacing from both sides of the political divide. Such flare-ups have historically followed high-stakes elections in the state, prompting repeated calls for stronger enforcement mechanisms.

The unrest follows a significant political shift in the state’s power structure. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a commanding victory, winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the All India Trinamool Congress saw its tally reduced to 80 seats, marking a dramatic reversal after years of dominance.

Security experts note that post-poll violence in West Bengal often stems from intense grassroots political rivalries, with local-level tensions spilling over after results. The deployment of central forces during and after elections is intended to stabilize such situations, but sporadic violence has remained a recurring challenge.

The Commission’s latest intervention signals heightened concern at the national level and underscores its constitutional mandate to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections. Officials said strict accountability will be enforced, and any lapses in maintaining order will be dealt with seriously.

Authorities on the ground have begun intensifying patrols in vulnerable areas, with additional forces deployed to restore normalcy. The situation remains under close watch as efforts continue to prevent further incidents and reassure residents across affected districts.
