Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 27 expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would form the next government in West Bengal, stating that he would return to the state for the oath-taking ceremony after the results are declared.
Speaking at a rally in Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district on the final day of campaigning, Modi said the “mood” of the state indicated a clear mandate in favour of the BJP. He added that he would come back after May 4 to attend the swearing-in of the new government.

The Prime Minister also launched a sharp attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress, accusing it of fostering “syndicate raj”, political violence and economic decline in the state. He alleged that governance had deteriorated under the current administration.
Modi’s remarks came on the last day of campaigning for the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, with voting scheduled to conclude shortly and counting set for May 4.
The BJP has intensified its campaign across the state in recent weeks, with multiple rallies led by senior leaders. The party is seeking to challenge the Trinamool Congress, which has been in power in West Bengal for over a decade.
The Prime Minister’s statement underscores the BJP’s confidence heading into the final phase of polling, as the high-stakes contest in the state approaches its conclusion.
The first phase of polling in West Bengal was held on April 23, covering 152 constituencies. The Election Commission reported a voter turnout of around 91.78% to 93.2%, one of the highest in the state’s electoral history.
The second and final phase of voting is scheduled for April 29, covering the remaining 142 seats. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
