Protests outside the India AI Impact Summit have sparked a strategic disagreement between the Indian National Congress and other INDIA bloc partners, exposing divisions over protest tactics and messaging ahead of national elections.

Protests at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 are deepening political tensions among opposition parties, particularly between the Indian National Congress and other members of the INDIA bloc, according to political leaders and party sources.
The disagreement centres on the handling of the protests and broader strategy ahead of upcoming elections.

The controversy began after several opposition parties held protests outside the summit in New Delhi, criticising the government’s AI policies and alleged exclusion of certain voices in the conversation on technology and governance.
While most opposition parties were involved in the demonstrations, differences have emerged over how the protests should be conducted and framed politically.
Senior leaders of the Congress have expressed concern that the protests could be politically counterproductive and have diluted the party’s focus on economic and governance issues they wish to highlight ahead of elections.
Some Congress leaders reportedly believe that joining street protests against the AI summit may not resonate with the wider electorate.
In contrast, allies within the INDIA bloc — a coalition of opposition parties formed to take on the ruling party — have pushed for more assertive protest actions, arguing that public demonstrations are necessary to draw attention to alleged policy failures and governance gaps. These differences have laid bare internal fault lines within the opposition alliance over strategy and messaging.
A Congress leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the party wants to emphasise issues like job creation, inflation and governance reforms, and is wary of protests diverting attention from these priorities. In contrast, other opposition parties see such demonstrations as essential to spotlighting what they term “government neglect” on important national agendas.
The protests outside the India AI Impact Summit included placards and slogans criticising the government’s AI framework and alleged exclusion of dissenting voices. Some opposition leaders framed the protest as a stand for transparent policymaking and inclusive debate on emerging technologies.
However, the differences within the opposition have become visible in public statements and social media, where some leaders criticised the protests as “ill-timed” or politically unstrategic.
The Congress’ more cautious stance appears to be aimed at balancing critique of the government with messaging that appeals to a broader voter base.
