After Bengal win, BJP weighs CM choices as Adhikari emerges as top contender

After securing a landmark victory in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has shifted focus to its next key decision — selecting the state’s chief minister.

The party, which did not project a chief ministerial face during the campaign, is now weighing its options following a clear majority that paves the way for its first government in the state.

No pre-declared face, decision pending

Unlike in some other states, the BJP did not project a chief ministerial candidate ahead of the elections. During the campaign, senior leaders had indicated that the CM would be a Bengali face, a strategy aimed at countering opposition narratives.

The final decision is expected to be taken by the party’s central leadership after consultations, with reports indicating meetings in Delhi involving top leaders to finalise the choice.

Suvendu Adhikari emerges as frontrunner

Among the names being discussed, Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the leading contender.

A former Trinamool Congress leader who switched to the BJP in 2020, Adhikari has played a central role in the party’s rise in Bengal. His political trajectory includes defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021 and again in the 2026 elections, strengthening his position within the party.

Party leaders have indicated that his consistent opposition to the TMC and strong organisational presence could weigh in his favour.

Other names in the mix

While Adhikari is seen as the frontrunner, the BJP has not officially announced its choice, and other leaders remain under consideration.

Samik Bhattacharya, the state BJP president, is viewed as a key organisational figure credited with expanding the party’s base in Bengal.

Agnimitra Paul, a senior leader and MLA, represents a possible push to project a woman leader and broaden the party’s appeal.

Other senior figures, including former state leaders, are also part of internal discussions, reflecting the range of options before the party leadership.

The BJP leadership has maintained that the final decision will be taken after consultations at the central level. Senior leaders are expected to deliberate on the choice, factoring in organisational experience, political positioning, and governance priorities.

The selection will be significant not just for government formation but also for shaping the BJP’s long-term strategy in West Bengal, where it is set to lead the administration for the first time. With the mandate secured, the focus now turns to leadership as the party prepares to transition from campaign to governance.
