19-year-old ex-schoolmate of slain girl strangled her, bludgeoned 10-year-old brother, and set both bodies on fire in a premeditated attack triggered by jealousy, according to police.

A chilling tale of obsession, betrayal, and violence has emerged from Patna’s Janipur area, where two siblings — a 15-year-old girl and her 10-year-old brother — were found charred to death inside their locked home on July 31. Police now say it was a double murder, meticulously planned and executed by a 19-year-old known to the family.
Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya Sharma on August 2 announced the arrest of Shubham Kumar and his accomplice Roshan Kumar — both 19 — for the murders that have shocked the city.

Investigators revealed that Shubham, a former schoolmate of the teenage girl, frequently visited the family’s home in Nagwa village. Their once-close relationship had become a source of tension, with both families reportedly disapproving of their interactions. According to police, Shubham grew increasingly resentful after learning that the girl had started interacting with someone else.
On July 31, the siblings returned home from school around 12:30 pm and were alone when Shubham allegedly arrived. Police say the girl let him in while her younger brother was asleep. What followed was a brutal and calculated act of violence.
“Shubham attacked the sleeping boy with a brick and strangled the girl to death,” SSP Sharma said. “He then doused their bodies with kerosene, set them on fire, locked the house from outside, and fled.”
Investigators say the attack was premeditated. Shubham had reportedly purchased kerosene from a shop in nearby Badi Khagaul earlier that day and carried it in a bottle to the crime scene. The shopkeeper later identified him during questioning.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by City SP (West) and SDPO Phulwarisharif Deepak Kumar cracked the case within 48 hours. CCTV footage, digital evidence, and the recovery of the kerosene bottle and three mobile phones helped seal the case.
Shubham reportedly confessed during interrogation, detailing how jealousy and rage drove him to commit the murders. Roshan Kumar, police say, helped him in the attempt to destroy evidence.
The murders have left the community reeling and sparked outrage over the vulnerability of children and the ease with which personal vendettas spiral into fatal violence. Police say further legal proceedings are underway and have assured the family of swift justice.
