On the eve of his 90th birthday, Tibetan spiritual leader the 14th Dalai Lama expressed a desire to continue living and serving for many more years, while firmly rejected Beijing’s involvement in choosing his successor.

During a long-life prayer ceremony in Dharamshala, the Dalai Lama said he intends to live at least 30 to 40 more years, possibly reaching 130—a marked increase from his prior estimate of 110.
He told followers, “So far, I have done my best… I hope to still live for 30‑40 years more,” attributing his vitality to blessings received during prayers.

Addressing global anxieties surrounding his succession, he reaffirmed that the decision over his reincarnation would rest solely with the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the independent institution he established—not the Chinese government.
He emphasized that traditional Buddhist practices will guide the process and implied that his future reincarnation will be located outside China, likely in the “free world.”
China sharply criticized his statement, insisting that Beijing must approve the next Dalai Lama using historical precedents such as the Golden Urn system and warned India against commenting.
India’s Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju later affirmed that the matter is a religious decision belonging to the Dalai Lama and his tradition.
Thousands of monks, senior Buddhist clergy, and pilgrims joined the ceremony, which featured traditional rituals, chants, fire pujas, oracles, and drum recitals.
The event also drew attention to decades-long efforts to preserve Tibetan identity, cultural heritage, and religious freedom.
His remarks come amid renewed geopolitical tension, as China views him as a separatist and exerts strict control over Tibetan affairs. Analysts warn rivalry over his succession could worsen India–China relations.
