A 49-year-old Delhi University professor was found dead inside her locked apartment in East Delhi's Vasundhara Enclave on June 4, prompting police to register a murder case and launch a detailed investigation.

The victim, Debosmita Paul, was an Assistant Professor at Shivaji College and lived alone in her flat at Satyam Apartments.

The case came to light around 2.35 pm when police received a PCR call from her sister, Devarati Paul, reporting that Debosmita had been found dead inside the apartment.

According to police, Devarati informed investigators that the flat had remained locked from the outside since the morning and that her sister was not responding to repeated phone calls. Growing concerned, she went to the apartment, broke open the lock and discovered Debosmita lying dead inside.

Police personnel rushed to the scene and sealed off the area. A crime team and forensic experts examined the apartment and collected evidence. The body was later shifted to LBS Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to murder. Multiple teams have been formed to identify and apprehend those responsible. Investigations are ongoing.

AAP targets BJP over law-and-order situation

While police have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death, AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar alleged that the professor had been murdered and linked the incident to what he described as a worsening law-and-order situation in the national capital.

Claiming that the victim had suffered multiple head injuries, Kumar said the killing reflected growing criminal audacity in Delhi.

"She was struck repeatedly on the head in a brutal attack. The fact that such murders are taking place even inside high-end residential complexes shows how emboldened criminals have become. They neither fear the police nor the government," he alleged.

The AAP legislator also blamed the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Delhi for the alleged rise in crime.

"Since the BJP's four-engine government assumed power in Delhi, crime has continued to rise. We have repeatedly asked why criminals are being allowed to operate without fear. Is the Delhi Police failing to discharge its responsibilities?" Kumar said.
