The expansion of Poshan Abhiyaan targets child malnutrition, maternal health, and micronutrient supplementation in urban slums, strengthening public health outcomes

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced the extension of the National Nutrition Mission, or Poshan Abhiyaan, to urban areas, particularly focusing on vulnerable populations in urban slums. The initiative aims to tackle malnutrition among children, improve maternal health, and ensure access to essential micronutrients in rapidly growing urban settlements.
Under the urban extension, the mission will implement community-based interventions, nutrition counseling, growth monitoring, and supplementation programs for children and pregnant or lactating women. Integration with existing municipal health services and collaboration with local NGOs will enhance outreach and ensure effective service delivery.

Experts note that addressing urban malnutrition is critical, as city slums often face overcrowding, poor sanitation, limited access to healthcare, and food insecurity. By extending Poshan Abhiyaan, the government seeks to reduce stunting, wasting, and anemia, while improving overall health indicators for women and children.
The program also contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) by promoting adequate nutrition, improving dietary diversity, and raising awareness about healthy eating practices. Use of digital monitoring and data-driven reporting will strengthen program efficiency and accountability.
Challenges include ensuring equitable coverage, sustaining community engagement, and addressing underlying social determinants of malnutrition. Coordination between urban local bodies, healthcare workers, and civil society organizations is essential for effective implementation.
Overall, the expansion of the National Nutrition Mission to urban areas reflects India’s commitment to inclusive nutrition and public health. By focusing on vulnerable urban populations, the initiative enhances health outcomes, strengthens preventive care, and contributes to long-term human capital development.
