Major ₹91,000 crore investment to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing, create jobs, and reduce import dependence

India has approved the establishment of a major semiconductor manufacturing facility in Gujarat, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s technological and industrial capabilities. The project involves an investment of approximately ₹91,000 crore and is expected to begin production by 2028.
The semiconductor facility will focus on producing essential chips used in electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, automobiles, and defence systems. Currently, India relies heavily on imports to meet its semiconductor demand, making domestic manufacturing critical for technological self-reliance and supply chain security.

The project is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities and promote the development of a broader semiconductor ecosystem, including component manufacturing, research, and skilled workforce development. It aligns with the government’s efforts to attract global investment and promote high-technology manufacturing.
This initiative supports national programmes such as Make in India and aims to position India as a global hub for semiconductor production. Strengthening domestic chip manufacturing will enhance technological sovereignty, support digital and industrial growth, and reduce vulnerability to global supply chain disruptions.
