Enhanced support under India Semiconductor Mission boosts domestic chip production and reduces import dependence

The Government of India has expanded financial incentives under the India Semiconductor Mission to promote domestic semiconductor manufacturing and strengthen India’s technological capabilities. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on imported chips and build a resilient semiconductor ecosystem to support the country’s growing electronics and digital economy.
Under the expanded framework, the government is providing financial support to companies establishing semiconductor fabrication units (fabs), chip design facilities, and packaging infrastructure. These incentives include capital subsidies, infrastructure assistance, and policy support to attract both domestic and foreign investors. The move is intended to accelerate the development of semiconductor manufacturing capabilities within India.

Semiconductors are essential components used in a wide range of sectors, including consumer electronics, telecommunications, automotive, healthcare, and defence. With increasing demand for electronic devices and digital technologies, ensuring a reliable domestic supply of semiconductors has become a strategic priority.
The initiative also encourages foreign investment and promotes technology transfer, helping India integrate into global semiconductor supply chains. It supports innovation, research, and skill development, which are essential for building a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem.
This expansion is significant for strengthening technological sovereignty and enhancing national security, as semiconductors are critical for defence systems and advanced technologies. It also supports economic growth by creating employment opportunities and boosting domestic manufacturing.
