The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has expanded the National Digital Literacy Programme, extending its reach to 50,000 additional villages across India. The initiative aims to enhance digital skills among rural populations, ensuring access to digital services, financial tools, and online governance platforms. This expansion is a crucial step toward bridging the digital divide and fostering inclusive growth.
The programme focuses on digital literacy, financial inclusion, and cybersecurity awareness. Participants are trained in using smartphones, online banking, digital payment systems, and government portals like DigiLocker and e-Shram. Emphasis is also placed on understanding basic cybersecurity measures to prevent fraud, identity theft, and online scams, empowering citizens to navigate digital platforms safely.

In addition, the programme facilitates access to digital public services, enabling rural populations to interact efficiently with government schemes, educational resources, and healthcare services. Training modules are designed to be user-friendly and locally relevant, accommodating participants with minimal prior exposure to technology. Special attention is given to including women, elderly, and marginalized groups to ensure equitable digital empowerment.
The initiative leverages public–private partnerships, with NGOs, community organisations, and technology companies supporting awareness campaigns and skill-building workshops. Integration with ongoing initiatives such as the Digital India Mission ensures coherence in policy implementation and long-term sustainability of digital literacy efforts.
Significance
The expansion of the National Digital Literacy Programme strengthens e-governance, enhances access to financial and government services, and empowers rural citizens with essential digital skills. By promoting inclusive digital participation, the programme bridges the rural–urban digital divide and contributes to building a digitally literate and empowered India.
