The initiative aims to deepen strategic partnerships through joint military exercises, capacity building, and defence exports, reinforcing India’s engagement with the Global South

India has announced a significant expansion of defence cooperation with African nations, reflecting its growing strategic engagement with the continent. The enhanced cooperation includes joint military exercises, specialized training programs for armed forces personnel, and increased defence exports, aimed at building long-term security partnerships.
Under this framework, India will support capacity building by providing training in areas such as counter-terrorism, peacekeeping operations, maritime security, and cyber defence. Joint exercises are expected to improve interoperability, enhance mutual trust, and enable sharing of best practices in addressing common security challenges.

Defence exports form another key pillar of the initiative, with India offering cost-effective and reliable defence equipment suited to the operational requirements of African countries. This approach supports Africa’s defence modernization while promoting India’s indigenous defence industry.
Experts note that the move aligns with India’s broader Global South engagement strategy, which emphasizes mutual development, strategic autonomy, and cooperation based on shared interests. Strengthening defence ties also enhances maritime security in critical regions such as the Indian Ocean, contributing to regional stability and the protection of vital sea lanes.
The expanded cooperation is expected to complement India’s diplomatic, economic, and development partnerships with Africa. While challenges such as coordination, resource constraints, and regional security complexities remain, sustained engagement and institutional mechanisms will be key to success.
Overall, the expansion of India–Africa defence cooperation reinforces South-South collaboration, strengthens maritime and regional security, and deepens strategic partnerships. It highlights India’s commitment to supporting peace, stability, and capacity building in Africa while advancing its role as a reliable security partner in the Global South.
