The treaty aims to protect marine ecosystems, regulate the use of marine genetic resources, and promote sustainable fisheries beyond national jurisdiction

India has formally ratified the United Nations treaty on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ). The move reflects India’s commitment to preserving ocean ecosystems and advancing global cooperation on marine biodiversity.
The treaty focuses on regulating access to marine genetic resources, promoting benefit-sharing from their use, and implementing measures to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems. It also emphasizes sustainable management of fisheries, environmental impact assessments for deep-sea activities, and the establishment of marine protected areas in international waters.

Experts note that ratification strengthens India’s role in global maritime governance and aligns with the country’s strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region. By committing to international standards, India aims to ensure the sustainable use of ocean resources while safeguarding ecological balance.
The treaty also supports India’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), which calls for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. It enables India to participate actively in negotiations on marine conservation measures, technology transfer, and capacity building for developing nations.
While challenges remain in implementing international norms at the national level and coordinating among scientific, legal, and regulatory bodies, the treaty provides a framework for responsible ocean stewardship. It also reinforces the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration involving governments, scientific institutions, and the private sector.
Overall, India’s ratification of the treaty marks a major step in marine environmental governance. By promoting biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and international cooperation, the move demonstrates India’s commitment to ecological sustainability and its leadership in shaping global ocean policy.
