Solar and wind capacity surge strengthens energy security and supports net-zero commitment

India has intensified its push toward renewable energy, expanding solar and wind capacity as part of its ambitious goal of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030. The move is aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels, enhancing energy security, and fulfilling global climate commitments.
According to officials from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, solar energy remains the primary driver of growth, supported by large-scale solar parks, rooftop solar installations, and government incentive schemes. Wind energy projects are also expanding, particularly in states such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan.

The expansion aligns with India’s pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and increase the share of clean energy in its overall power mix. Experts say renewable energy development will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also help stabilize long-term energy costs and reduce reliance on imported oil and coal.
India’s renewable energy push has also positioned the country as a global leader in climate action. The country co-founded the International Solar Alliance to promote solar energy adoption worldwide and strengthen international cooperation in clean energy technologies.
However, challenges remain, including land acquisition issues, grid integration, and the need for energy storage solutions to address the intermittent nature of solar and wind power. Despite these hurdles, policymakers remain optimistic that continued investment and policy support will help India achieve its clean energy targets.
Energy analysts note that expanding renewable energy capacity will play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable economic growth, creating green jobs, and supporting India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
