India’s wind energy growth powered by Gujarat, which contributes nearly one-third of generation

Gujarat has emerged as India’s leading state in wind energy, with an installed capacity of 16,086 MW as of June 30, the highest among all states, according to data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
The state also recorded the country’s highest wind power generation during the financial year 2025-26, producing 33,706 million units (MUs) of electricity.

This accounted for nearly one-third of India’s total wind energy generation during the year, highlighting Gujarat’s significant contribution to the country’s renewable energy expansion.
India’s total installed wind energy capacity stood at 57,443 MW as of June 2026, while overall wind power generation reached 106 billion units during FY 2025-26.
Gujarat’s share in both installed capacity and generation has played a major role in strengthening India’s renewable energy portfolio.
The growth of wind energy in Gujarat has been supported by various initiatives aimed at improving transmission infrastructure, encouraging investment and increasing renewable energy integration into the national grid.
The Green Energy Corridor Scheme has enabled the development of dedicated transmission lines and substations for efficient evacuation of renewable power.
Other measures supporting the sector include waivers on Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges to encourage renewable energy investments, the National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects, 2023, which focuses on upgrading existing wind projects, and the Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, 2023, along with the Viability Gap Funding Scheme for Offshore Wind Projects, which have created opportunities for future offshore wind development.
Gujarat’s renewable energy expansion has been driven by its focus on strengthening infrastructure, improving policy support and creating conditions for greater participation in the clean energy sector.
The state’s coastal geography and favourable wind conditions have contributed to the large-scale development of wind power projects.
The rise in wind energy capacity and generation aligns with India’s broader renewable energy goals, including achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030 and reducing the carbon intensity of the economy.
The state government said Gujarat’s progress in wind energy reflects the importance of coordinated policy implementation, infrastructure development and integration of renewable power into the electricity network.
