The Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG) 2027 could become shorter and more convenient for students under a proposed new exam format that may allow candidates to complete all their papers on a single day.

The proposal, being discussed by the Ministry of Education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Testing Agency (NTA), is aimed at simplifying the examination process and reducing the burden on students who currently may have to appear at centres on multiple days.

However, the proposed changes are still under discussion and have not been finalised. The final CUET UG 2027 pattern will be announced by the NTA through an official notification.

What is the ‘one student, one day’ plan?

Under the proposed model, each candidate could be allotted a single examination day on which they would take all the subjects selected for CUET UG.

While the entrance test itself could continue across several days, individual students may no longer need to travel to an examination centre on multiple occasions.

The change could particularly benefit candidates travelling to another city for the entrance test, potentially reducing expenses related to transportation, accommodation and repeated travel.

CUET papers may become shorter

The proposed changes could also reduce the duration of individual CUET UG papers.

At present, each paper is of 60 minutes, with candidates allowed to select up to five subjects. Under the format being considered, the duration of individual papers could be reduced, with students opting for five subjects potentially completing all their tests in around 180 to 200 minutes.

There is also a proposal to reduce the maximum number of subjects a candidate can select from five to four.

Subject groups could make scheduling easier

To make the one-day format workable, authorities are also considering grouping subjects that are commonly chosen together.

For instance, Physics, Chemistry and Biology could be placed in one group for students seeking admission to science programmes. Such grouping could allow related papers to be scheduled together and help candidates complete their examinations on the same day.

The proposed changes are intended to make CUET UG less demanding from a scheduling and travel perspective while streamlining the examination process.

For now, however, the plan remains under consideration. Students preparing for CUET UG 2027 should continue to follow the existing information available and wait for the NTA's official notification before making decisions based on the proposed format.
